Bachelor of Commerce Degree with NUI Diploma in International Hotel Management (BComm)
Course Overview
The Bachelor of Commerce Degree allows students to study international hotel management while providing them with the opportunity to pursue one of the following business specialisations in NUI Galway: Accounting, Human Resource Management, Economics, Marketing or Management Information Systems.
Students graduate with two qualifications; a Bachelor of Commerce Degree from NUI Galway and a Diploma in International Hotel Management from the NUI.

Course Structure
Year 1: Study in Shannon
Practical Training
Students rotate between five professional practical classes every two weeks (Culinary Studies, Restaurant and Bar Management, Accommodation, Food Science and IT).
Business Basics
Accounting, Economics, Principles of Management, Front Office and Business Communications are introduced in this year.
Language Studies
Students continue to study their second language (French, German, Spanish or English) to prepare them for their Year 2 Placement.
Year 2: Twelve Month Placement
Professional Work Placement
12 month professional placement in leading Irish and continental hotels to reinforce practical training in Year 1 and build knowledge of industry practice and systems. This is an operative placement where students will have an opportunity to get an in-depth knowledge of the day to day operations of a hotel.
Locations
Placement locations include Switzerland, Germany, France, Spain, Belgium, Luxembourg, the UK and Ireland. Visa requirements and the foreign language option that students are pursuing determines the location of the placement.

Year 3: Study in Shannon
Industry Knowledge
Food and Beverage Studies, Accommodation Management and Hospitality and Business Law prepare students for leadership roles in the industry.
Business Studies
Human Resource Management, Financial Management, Management Accounting, Quantitative Methods and Principles of Services Marketing are introduced in this year. Language studies are continued from Year 1 and Year 2.
Preparation for Year 4
Additional prerequisite modules are taken in preparation for joining the final year of the BComm degree at NUI Galway.
Leadership Development
Students are given the opportunity to showcase their skills, knowledge and leadership potential at college events throughout the year, including graduation, fundraising events, social committees and open restaurant experiences.
Year 4: Study in NUI Galway
Join BComm course at NUI Galway
Students progress into the final year of the BComm and select a business specialism to pursue during their academic year in NUI Galway. The business specialism options at NUI Galway are Accounting, Human Resource Management, Economics, Marketing or Management Information Systems.

End of Year 4: Nine Month Trainee Management Placement
Trainee Management Placement/Internship
At the end of Year 4, students undertake a 9 month trainee management placement/internship in hotels in worldwide locations. International hotel companies visit Shannon College to recruit Year 4 students onto management development programmes and similar paths in prestigious properties around the world.

Subjects
ACCA Exemptions
Shannon College graduates of the BComm are eligible to receive up to seven exemptions from ACCA exams. The ACCA (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) is a global body for certified accountants. The ACCA award accounting qualifications which are recognised around the world. Honours graduates of the BComm are eligible to pursue postgraduate studies (including Masters programmes) in many different academic fields.
