Course Overview

The course caters specifically for the English language needs of students who intend to enrol on the BBS programme in Shannon College of Hotel Management. It is ideally suited to students who have attained the academic requirements for their chosen degree but who need to improve their spoken and written English.

Course Structure

English for Academic Purposes

This module aims to give students the specific academic language skills (both spoken and written) to pursue a degree through English. Topics covered include reading techniques, paragraph writing, essay writing, exam techniques and given presentation.

Professional English for Hospitality

This module aims to give students the written and spoken skills necessary to communicate effectively in a hotel environment. It also strives to familiarize them with the specific vocabulary needed for the various subjects in the Bachelor of Business Studies Degree in International Hotel Management. Topics covered include vocabulary for hotel services, food and drink, bar skills, complaint handling, telephone skills, letter and CV writing.

Communication Skills and Grammar

This module aims to build upon students’ existing competencies in order to raise their proficiency in the four language skills (speaking, listening, reading and writing) to a high level. Grammar is integrated into all modules of the program, but it is given specific emphasis in the module. Topics covered include conversational skills, discussion and debates, interviewing, pronunciation, exposure to different accents, authentic texts, regular written assignments and all the main areas of grammar.

Cultural Studies

The purpose of this module is to give students the cultural skills necessary to live and work in Irish society. Students will also focus on vocabulary building, reading skills and discussion work. Topics covered include music, literature, politics, art, social issues, lifestyle and language.
