Sport
Hurling, Gaelic Football, Rugby, Basketball and Soccer
are the main team sports played in the Shannon
Region and enjoy a strong following among young
people in the area. The Munster rugby team in particular
has enjoyed considerable success in European Cup
competition. Most team sports are played at amateur
level, providing an outlet for students who want
to learn a new sport and meet people outside of
the College environment.
Indoor Sports and Swimming
Shannon has a very popular swimming pool and leisure
complex that is within walking distance of the
College. There are also several gyms located throughout
the county for those who like to work out regularly.
For serious minded sports people, the facilities
at the University of Limerick are truly excellent
with an Olympic size swimming-pool, diving boards
and fitness centre located on campus.
Leisure Time
For those who like to watch sports as well as participate,
greyhound racing and horse racing are a must see
and both are available in Limerick. Many students
also like to avail of the equestrian facilities
available close by and, like many other counties
in Ireland, Clare has several championship golf
courses. In fact, Shannon Golf Club is within walking
distance of the College. Because of the diversity
of its landscape, many scenic routes are available
to ramblers, hill walkers and cyclists. |

Water Sport
There are several marks around the Clare coast from
which sea angling can be enjoyed and with over 40
lakes located in East Clare alone, trout and pike
fishing are very well catered for. County Clare has
three marinas situated in: Kilrush (where Kilrush
Creek Adventure Centre is located), Mountshannon
and Killaloe. Kayak enthusiasts have many
opportunities to enjoy their sport. Several cabin
cruiser companies operate from the marinas.
Arts and Culture
Irish music, dancing and literature are renowned
the world over. Because the Shannon Region is
such an attractive place to visit, there are
many opportunities to enjoy the culture of Ireland
every week of the year! The medieval banquets
at nearby Bunratty Castle are truly memorable
and the local pubs and hotels have live music
and traditional Irish groups playing on their
premises at weekends. The Glór Irish Music
Centre in Ennis is a particularly vibrant venue
which hosts concerts, plays and cultural events
year round.
For people whose music tastes are more
broadly based, local night clubs are open at
weekends. There are also several interesting
festivals held in the region at different times
of the year such as: the Fresh Film Festival,
EXPO Limerick, Sionna Festival of European Traditional
Music, ESB West Clare Jazz Festival, Doonbeg
Theatre Festival and the Unfringed Festival at
the Belltable Arts Centre.
And if none of the above activities appeal to
you, you can always enjoy a game of ten-pin bowling,
snooker, pool or darts! |
