Career Options
Graduates holding either of the Bachelor of Business Studies or Bachelor of Commerce qualifications have a world of opportunities available to them. In addition to obtaining a highly regarded academic qualification, Shannon College students have the experience of two professional placements to add to their Curriculum Vitae upon graduation.

The most obvious career for graduates to pursue is one in international hotel management. This dynamic career offers ambitious young managers the chance to progress quickly up the management ladder upon graduation. Many Shannon College graduates have found themselves holding the position of General Manager within five years of their graduation. Many graduates have also progressed to starting and running their own hotels and hospitality businesses. The College places great emphasis on entrepreneurship in its studies. As can be seen from the Graduate Profiles section of this website, a career in hotel management also brings with it many opportunities to travel and work around the world. This is not surprising, given that tourism is the planet’s fastest growing industry. Because of the richness of the practical training, the international industry placement and the business education delivered on the degree programmes, Shannon graduates are particularly valued by hotel industry employers.

For those graduates who choose not to work in the international hospitality industry, their career opportunities are literally endless. Every industry needs qualified managers with a customer orientation and within a short time of graduation holders of the BBS or BComm qualification with the right abilities and motivation could find themselves working as:
  • Department Managers
  • Deputy Managers
  • Assistant Managers
  • Administrators
  • Co-ordinators
Graduates at some point in their careers may also choose to specialise in a particular functional area such as: Human Resource Management, Information Technology, Marketing, Accounting or Finance. Specialisation can occur over time, as a graduate concentrates on working in one functional area, or may be achieved by pursuing postgraduate studies at Postgraduate Diploma, Masters or Doctoral level.

Some graduates have also chosen to pursue a teaching career, working as college lecturers in Ireland and abroad. For Shannon graduates the career options are endless!
