Irish and EU students who wish to apply for either of the degree programs offered by Shannon College must apply through the Central Applications Office (CAO) located at:

Entry Requirements SN001 and SN002


Irish Leaving Certificate
Candidates must obtain a pass grade in at least 6 subjects, with at least Grade C3 in 2 subjects on Higher course papers and at least Grade D3 (ordinary or higher course) in the remaining four subjects of the Leaving Certificate. These subjects must include the following: Irish, English, Mathematics, a third language accepted for Matriculation, and any two other subjects accepted for Matriculation registration purposes.

Students who intend to pursue French as their continental language upon enrolment at Shannon College must obtain a Grade D3 on Higher course papers or at least Grade B3 on Ordinary course papers.

The three Link Modules on the Leaving Certificate Vocational Programme (LCVP) will be considered as a composite subject and may be used as being among the six best subjects for the calculation of points. One Links Module does not count as satisfying one of the six minimum entry subject requirements. Points are allocated as follows:

  • Pass - 30
  • Merit - 50
  • Distinction - 70
Leaving Certificate Applied and Foundation Level Mathematics and Irish do not meet the minimum requirements. The College will accept NUI exemptions for any of the minimum matriculation requirements.

FETAC Level 5 Certificates
In 2006, Shannon College of Hotel Management has a quota of 5 places reserved for qualified FETAC Level 5 award holders who wish to gain entry to its Bachelor of Business Studies Degree Programme SN001. Applicants should present full awards in one of the following FETAC Level 5 Certificates:

For matriculation purposes candidates are required to obtain distinctions (80% or greater) in any 5 of their 8 modules and obtain at least pass grades in the remaining three modules in the FETAC certificate they have pursued from the list above.

GCE/GCSE Exminations
Candidates must pass three 'A' level subjects with minimum grades of CCD. In addition, a missing language subject may be presented at GCSE. level with a minimum grade C. All candidates must present a minimum of six GCE/GCSE subjects, which must include pass levels (grade C or higher) in English and Mathematics.

International Baccalaureate Diploma
Candidates must pass six subjects, three at Higher Level and three at Subsidiary Level.

Candidates who wish to present other qualifications to gain admittance to Shannon College should contact the Admissions Office directly to discuss minimum entry requirements. Please note that candidates must satisfy the matriculation regulations of the National University of Ireland to gain admittance to the degree programs. Interview Procedure
Candidates who apply for a place on either degree program will be invited to interview. These candidates are requested to complete an application form by Shannon College prior to the interview.

Interviews take place at Shannon College or at designated regional centres in Ireland and abroad. The interview helps prospective students to learn more about the College as they have an opportunity to meet faculty and staff. A maximum of 300 points can be awarded for the interview. These points are added to those awarded to the candidate from grades received through exam results.

Offers
In August each year, the CAO issues offers to candidates in Ireland and the EU who successfully meet the entrance requirements to gain admittance to SN001 and SN002. Please note that due to competition for places, students may require well in excess of the minimum points required for matriculation. The minimum points (including exam and interview results) in 2004 were:
    SN001 - 450
    SN002 - 590
Acceptance of Places
Candidates who are offered a place on SN001 and SN002 must accept their place following the CAO guidelines that accompany their offers.

Fees
Both SN001 and SN002 qualify for the Department of Education and Science's Free Fees Initiative and qualify for higher education and local authority grants.

Irish and other EU nationals are not required to pay tuition fees if the third-level student is (a) a first-time undergraduate and (b) holds EU nationality or official refugee status and has been ordinarily resident in an EU member state for at least 3 of the 5 years preceding their entry to an approved third-level course.

Age Limit for Entry
Students must have reached 17 years of age by January 15 th of the year following proposed entry to the College.

Entry Requirements for Foundation Language Programme
EU candidates whose native language is not English may benefit from a period of study on the Foundation English language programme. This programme is not covered by the Free Fees Initiative.
