As part of the recent 60th anniversary celebrations, Shannon College of Hotel Management launched a book of research papers; Tourism and Hospitality Research in Ireland – Current Challenges and Future Opportunities. The book is an edited selection of papers presented at the Tourism and Hospitality Research in Ireland Conference (THRIC) held at Shannon College of Hotel Management in June 2010.

The Conference Papers

The research papers reflect the challenges faced by the global tourism and hospitality industry such as: worldwide recession, contracting markets, sustainability and meeting the ever-increasing customer expectations. The conference also looked to the future opportunities as acknowledged by research papers presented covering such diverse topics as the current educational needs of students within the hospitality and tourism sector and future marketing initiatives.

The ‘Best Research Paper’  award was presented to Margaret Walsh at the recent  THRIC conference held at Shannon College. The winning paper; Creating Superior Competitive Advantages for the Small Tourism Firm Through Capitalising on the Firm-Level Dynamic Capability of Innovativeness; was submitted to the conference by authors Margaret Walsh, Dr. Patrick Lynch and Dr. Denis Harrington of Waterford Institute of Technology.

In total, 37 academic papers were presented at the 6th annual Tourism and Hospitality Research in Ireland Conference hosted by Shannon College on June 15th and 16th, 2010, covering research on competitiveness, strategy, sustainability, cultural identity and various other contemporary themes relating to current challenges and opportunities in the tourism and hospitality sectors.

THRIC 2010, the 6th annual ‘Tourism and Hospitality Research in Ireland Conference’ took place this week for the first time in the Midwest region of Ireland. Shannon College of Hotel Management hosted the conference which attracted researchers and academics in the fields of tourism and hospitality from around Ireland and abroad. The two day conference blended the best of Irish and international research with keynote speeches from Mr. Gerald Lawless, Executive Chairman of Jumeirah International, Dubai and Dr. Des O’Mahony, Founder and Chief Executive of Bookassist.

Other keynote speakers included Mr. Brian O’Connell, Chairman, and Mr. Michael Vaughan, Tourism Pillar Facilitator of Ireland’s Atlantic Way. The second day of the conference featured a conference call discussion with Prof. Abraham Pizam, Dean and Chair in Tourism Management, University of Central Florida, and the conference was formally closed by Prof. William Golden, Dean, College of Business, Public Policy and Law, NUI Galway.
