Visiting at Other Times

Students are welcome to visit Shannon College at any time throughout the college year to take a look around and talk to the Admissions Office. Tuesdays to Thursdays are the best days to visit and to see all the practical classes in operation. Please call the Admissions Office the day before to let us know you are intending to visit (061 712590).

Eleven senior lecturers from Shannon College are visiting the Seychelles Tourism Academy (STA) this week, as part of the first phase of a partnership with the academy. The partnership is the first of its kind for Shannon College of Hotel Management and will provide significant opportunities for the staff and students in both Shannon and the Seychelles. The tropical islands located in the Indian Ocean are renowned for their white sandy beaches and turquoise waters and have a dynamic and thriving tourism industry.

The Seychelles Tourism Academy plays a vital role in providing professionally educated graduates to work in the luxurious hotels and properties on the islands. The partnership will involve the validation of the STA’s diploma course in hotel management by Shannon College to ensure the diploma course meets the standards of the National University of Ireland. Following the validation process, STA students will have the opportunity to take on a bachelor degree at Shannon College after their diploma in the Seychelles.

The partnership also provides opportunities for Shannon students to gain valuable experience working in luxurious and exclusive hotels in the Seychelles during their summer break. This summer, 11 Shannon College students travelled to the Seychelles to work in properties such as the Four Seasons Resort, the Labriz Resort and Le Muria Hotel. The students will live and work in the Seychelles for 10 weeks before returning to Shannon College for their final year of studies.

The class of 2009 have finished their first year of studies at Shannon College and are travelling now to start their Year 2 professional work placement. Over 80 students will begin the 12 month paid, professional internship in leading hotels around Ireland and Europe. Irish/EU students are placed in hotels in Switzerland, France, Spain, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands and Ireland.

International students build on their experience of studying in Ireland by working in one of Ireland’s leading hotels starting July 1st. The Year 2 work placement will give students an opportunity to work in many different departments of their hotel and apply their knowledge in the setting of a real, operational hotel.

The Year 2 placement is a great opportunity for students with a desire to travel and work in another city or country. It is great experience for students to have on their CV and there is also the benefit of earning an income for one year!

The ‘Best Research Paper’  award was presented to Margaret Walsh at the recent  THRIC conference held at Shannon College. The winning paper; Creating Superior Competitive Advantages for the Small Tourism Firm Through Capitalising on the Firm-Level Dynamic Capability of Innovativeness; was submitted to the conference by authors Margaret Walsh, Dr. Patrick Lynch and Dr. Denis Harrington of Waterford Institute of Technology.

In total, 37 academic papers were presented at the 6th annual Tourism and Hospitality Research in Ireland Conference hosted by Shannon College on June 15th and 16th, 2010, covering research on competitiveness, strategy, sustainability, cultural identity and various other contemporary themes relating to current challenges and opportunities in the tourism and hospitality sectors.
