Young Hotelier Summit
Shannon College of Hotel Management was once again invited to participate in the 2nd Annual Young Hotelier Summit (YHS) held at the École Hotelier de Lausanne in Lausanne, Switzerland. Four students were selected to attend and represent the college; Shane Ryan (Year 3), Mairead Hallihan (Year 3), Johannes Luik (Year 3) and Kelly Clair (Year 4). YHS 2011 was attended by 45 delegates from 13 prestigious hospitality institutions from across the globe.
Shane Ryan (Year 3 Student) Reports from Lausanne:
“The Young Hotelier Summit is the brainchild of the career club at the École Hotelier de Lausanne (EHL) and acts towards improving professional opportunities for young talents in the hospitality industry by fostering a dialogue on employment between hospitality companies, educational institutions and the young in hospitality, ultimately developing actionable proposals, aligning the main stakeholders regarding their mutual expectations, capacities and aspirations.
The YHS is the first student run hospitality summit of its kind in the world and is committed to bridging the gap between hospitality students and the industry as well as creating and improving opportunities for future graduates. The YHS aims to grow a powerful network of likeminded young talents as well as act as a forum where ideas, experiences and advice is shared in an open environment.
The 2011 Summit was sponsored by the Rezidor Group, the fastest growing hotel group in the world, who put forward the creativity challenge for this year’s event: “In a society that is moving towards virtual interaction, how do you keep a brand connected with its customers?” Delegates were divided into mixed groups of 5 students and had 6 hours over the course of the event to devise a solution which had to be presented on the final day to the delegates, judging panel and various other attendees.
The 2-day event comprised of a number of networking events, workshops, panel discussions, and inspirational talks from industry leaders. Speakers over the course of the event included Jean Claude Biver, CEO Hublot Watches, Kurt Ritter, President and CEO, The Rezidor Hotel Group and Thomas Willms, Vice President & Regional Director of East and Central Europe, Starwood Hotels and Resorts.
As the YHS 2011 drew to a close, all the delegates agreed on its success. Not only did the delegates of 2011 expand and enhance their future opportunities in the hospitality industry but also created life long bonds, friendships and a wider professional network. The YHS 2011 ended on a high note at the official after party held at the exclusive Buzz Nightclub in Lausanne concluding a memorable and unforgettable experience.”
